Copy of 5G and Ghana’s Data Prices: Sam George Sparks Debate on Telecom Realities

14/04/2025
A tweet from Member of Parliament Sam ‘Dzata’ George has ignited widespread conversation on Ghana’s telecom landscape, particularly the role of 5G in addressing rising data prices.

In response to a post from Tech In Twi on X, suggesting that current data costs stem from telecom firms and regulatory decisions, Sam George pushed back strongly, challenging the notion that 5G could provide immediate relief to consumers.

“Respectfully, if you are suggesting that 5G is the solution to cheaper data prices, you expose a serious lack of understanding of the telecoms sector,” he wrote. “5G is not a unit consumer business model. It is modelled around service industries like mining, telemedicine and oil exploration.”

“Today, you barely have 1 million 5G-enabled devices in the country as against a market of over 40 million devices. How does 5G fix that?” he added.

Tech In Twi had earlier argued that data price hikes were largely influenced by National Communications Authority (NCA) policies and delays in past negotiations with Google, which disrupted potential infrastructure expansions.

The back-and-forth underscores growing public frustration with high data costs and the slow rollout of advanced telecom services. While some expect 5G to revolutionize connectivity, others, like Sam George, caution that the technology is not yet viable for broad consumer impact in Ghana.

The exchange has garnered over 458,000 views, and sparked a wave of reactions online, with many weighing in on whether policymakers and tech enthusiasts are aligned on realistic solutions for the digital economy.
