Sarkodie Sues Ecobank Ghana Over Alleged Unauthorized Use of His Image

14/04/2025
Renowned Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, has taken legal action against Ecobank Ghana, accusing the financial institution of using his image without consent. The lawsuit, filed at the Commercial Division of the High Court, alleges that Ecobank used Sarkodie’s likeness in a recent campaign titled “Looks Can Be Deceiving” without seeking or obtaining his permission.

According to the court documents circulating online, the rapper is demanding damages, a perpetual injunction to prevent any future use of his image, and a complete withdrawal of all related publications across media platforms.

The promotional material in question features a man who bears a striking resemblance to Sarkodie, dressed in a denim jacket and sunglasses, with the campaign warning customers about scams that look legitimate on the surface.

While the image has sparked public interest and debate, some social media users, like verified Twitter user Eric Etse, argue that the man in the advertisement is not Sarkodie, but merely a look-alike. “This is not Sark, it is his look-alike!” Etse posted, igniting even more discussion around the identity of the person featured.

Whether it’s truly Sarkodie or someone who closely resembles him, the rapper appears determined to protect his brand and image in the court of law. The case has stirred conversations around the importance of consent and intellectual property rights in the age of digital media, especially for public figures.

As the legal process unfolds, all eyes will be on the courtroom to see how the matter is resolved—and what precedent it might set for future image rights cases in Ghana.
